Too Busy to….Workout?

Whether you are a stay at home parent, a student with never-ending projects and finals looming ahead, or a business person in high demand, many of us have been in situations where we have not had time to go to the gym. Maybe this has happened to you once in a while or maybe you’ve been caught in a rut. Sure, we could probably wake up at 4am to get a lift session in. But realistically, that schedule does not work for the majority of people. Instead of being bummed out about not making it to the gym, here are some ways you can bring the gym home! 

There are many people who do not have the resources, time, or means to get into the gym each week. We get it; our lives are busy. This does not mean that you cannot workout; in fact, far from it! There are so many different exercises and modes of exercise that can be extremely effective while training from home. Check out this list of simple movements to kickstart your at home gym routine.

Body Weight Exercises:

  • Squats
  • Pushups 
  • Lunges
  • Sit Ups
  • Burpees
  • Dips
  • Step Ups
  • Glute Bridges
  • Planks
  • Box Jumps
  • Jumprope
  • Calf Raises
  • Donkey Kicks

The list goes on and on. The beauty about each of these exercises is that there are ways to scale or modify them all. This means you can make it harder or easier depending on how your body is feeling. For example, if you cannot do regular pushups, try doing them on your knees or with your hands up against a wall or on the edge of a table. In retrospect you can make them harder by placing your feet at an incline (maybe on top of a sturdy coffee table).

If you have already been doing at home workouts, try investing in some resistance bands, dumbbells, a medicine ball, bosu ball, a kettlebell, or a yoga ball. These simple (and usually reasonable) additions can easily boost your workouts so you are constantly pushing yourself. These addition provide more of a challenge and ensures that you do not get bored. It is necessary to say, if you are a beginner, take it slow. Do not try to lift heavy weights right off of the bat. Build up to more difficult movements and variations of exercises.

Some other ideas include using the resources available to you. YouTube has tons of free videos that will take you through at-home workouts. You can find anything from yoga sessions to HIIT ideas.
