Have you ever had a day where you’re so busy that you forget to eat? I talk to people that struggle with this all the time. A lot of people take a bite of breakfast and have nothing else until they collapse in the evening after a long, busy day.
Some people think that not eating if you don’t get hungry during the day is a great way to lose weight… sorry, but this is very wrong. Eating less does not burn body fat, it burns muscle tissue. Think about it- when you are starving your metabolism wants more stored energy and body fat stores energy. So, when our metabolism thinks we are starting it holds onto the body fat and burns muscle tissue. So do your body and health a favor and stop the “I’m too busy to eat” talk- we have some solutions for when you are too busy to eat at work.
Step away from your desk and computerChanging your scenery is good for your productivity. Staring at your computer screen for 8 hours a day is not good for your brain. The same goes for your phone. Leaving your phone at your desk when taking even a short break makes it easier to relax. Try taking a walk in the park or around your office building at least once a day. Stretching your legs and clearing your mind of work-related things helps you remember what your own priorities are so you can take control of your schedule.
Eat something nutritiousProvide your body the nutrients it needs to get you through your day. Not eating breakfast or waiting too long to eat lunch can mean resorting to caffeine and sugar for a quick reboot. Of course, resorting to sugar will backfire when you crash two hours before quitting time. Eat a balanced lunch with a healthy balance of protein, healthy fats, and complex carbohydrates. It is also important to keep a nutritious snack on hand for when your attention starts to fade in the late afternoon. We recommend a Too Busy To Eat bar (obviously!) Feed your body before you crash!
Make some easy, healthy snacks ahead of time
The biggest myth about packing snacks is that it is hard to do. And one of the hardest things to avoid at work when you are starving and on a time crunch is the vending machine. Sure, the vending machine is convenient but the foods in it are full of sugars and preservatives. These are what causes you to crash- making the rest of your day nearly impossible to get through. Some office snacks that are easy to pack ahead of time are protein bars, string cheese, nuts like almonds, cashews, and pecans, hummus and carrots or celery, and a hard boiled egg. Sometimes, no matter how hard you try, having a busy lifestyle means that there is going to be a day when you can’t avoid getting takeout. But, getting a meal on the run doesn’t mean it has to be unhealthy. Avoid value meals and try to make choices that tailor to your lifestyle. Opt for no cheese and mayo on your burger and get a salad instead of french fries. Get grilled instead of fried and ask for a side of veggies or fruit!
